Las cuatro fases del añoThe four phases of the year

Spain is one of Europe's great crossroads for bird migration. Its position between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, and the mere 14 km separating Europe from Africa at the Strait of Gibraltar, funnel the movements of millions of birds every year.

Birds that have wintered in sub-Saharan Africa and the Maghreb cross the Strait of Gibraltar to reoccupy their breeding territories in Iberia and the rest of Europe. La invernada peninsularWintering in Iberia

El gran refugio de aves acuáticas y de interiorA great refuge for waterbirds and inland birds

Spain is one of the main wintering grounds of western Europe. Doñana gathers more than 100,000 Northern Shovelers, the Guadiana rice fields up to 30,000 Black-tailed Godwits and inland Iberia hundreds of thousands of Lesser Black-backed Gulls, while cranes spread across dehesas and farmland.

The relief and position of the peninsula create three main routes.

Only 14 km separate Europe from Africa here. It is the funnel for large soaring birds, which avoid flying over the sea because there are no thermals there: between 5 July and 15 December 2025, Fundación Migres counted more than 605,000.

Passes such as Lindus, Organbidexka and Lizarrieta channel birds from Scandinavia, the British Isles and central Europe into Iberia and on towards Africa.

Sites such as Doñana, the Ebro Delta, the Albufera of Valencia, Gallocanta and Villafáfila are essential resting and feeding stops for waterbirds and waders.

Preguntas frecuentesFrequently asked questions

When is the best time to watch migration at the Strait of Gibraltar?

The Strait of Gibraltar has two peak periods: the spring passage (March to May), with the arrival of Black Kites, Short-toed Snake Eagles and Black Storks; and the much larger autumn passage (July to October), with the White Stork peaking in August and the European Honey Buzzard in September.

Which weather factors decide when birds cross the Strait?

The wind even decides where you should stand. In Fundación Migres's spring 2007 count, on easterly (levante) days the passage was followed in the western sector, from Los Lances beach to Bolonia, and on westerly (poniente) days in the eastern sector, towards the Bay of Algeciras. Wind also delays the crossing: satellite-tracked Booted Eagles waited up to six days around the Strait, and Black Kites gather there in tens of thousands before crossing.

How many migratory species does this calendar cover?

This calendar analyses 32 key species with checked figures, across 61 monthly entries — several appear in more than one month because their passage spans several. They are a selection: many more species use Spain for breeding, passage or wintering.

How is climate change affecting the timing of bird migration in Spain?

There are measured changes. According to SEO/BirdLife, in the 1960s the Barn Swallow reached the Iberian Peninsula on average around 30 March, and today it does so around the 16th, about two weeks earlier. And more and more White Storks, both Iberian and central European, now winter in Spain instead of crossing to Africa.

How can I check migrating birds with BirdPedy?

The BirdPedy map brings together the last few days' sightings from eBird, iNaturalist, MINKA and its own community. For historical data there is the planner, which adds GBIF data (Observation.org and the Institut Català d'Ornitologia) and shows where in each province a species has been recorded in a given month over the last five years.
