The Black-headed Weaver is the 'architect' of the marshes. Escapes from the pet trade have led to established breeding populations in Andalusia (Sevilla, Huelva, Málaga). Their incredible 'hanging' nests, often built in colonies above water, are a unique and exotic sight in our countryside. While a beautiful addition, they are considered invasive and their growth is monitored. They represent the incredible craftsmanship of the weaver family and the expansion of African species to our wetlands. It is a symbol of the African village life.

In the Black-headed Weaver, the breeding male has a black forehead, crown, cheeks, chin and throat. The bib, of the same color, extends to the center of the breast, where an orange patch gives way to the yellow belly. The mantle and back are greenish yellow, the rump yellow and the tail olive green. The wings are barred yellow and black. The female is much less striking, mostly olive green on the head and brown on the mantle and back, as well as on the wings, where the brown is mixed with yellow and black, less barred than in the male.

Established populations in Sevilla, Huelva, and Málaga. Nests in conspicuous colonies.
