Por qué es poco comúnWhy it is uncommon

A steppe bird with a powerful, varied song.

One of the best singers of the Spanish countryside. Unlike many smaller larks, the Calandra is a bird of the open, treeless horizons—cereal fields, fallows, and dry grasslands. Spain, along with Russia, holds the most important global populations of this species. It is a hardy bird, but sensitive to the loss of traditional fallow land and the use of heavy agricultural chemicals.

A large, robust lark, almost the size of a thrush. It has a thick, powerful bill and a characteristic large black patch on each side of the neck. In flight, it is unmistakable due to its broad, dark underwings with a prominent white trailing edge. Its song is a magnificent, loud imitation of other birds, often delivered during a high, circling display flight. It is a true symbol of the Mediterranean cereal plains.

Widespread across the Iberian interior: the two Mesetas, Ebro Valley, Extremadura, and the Guadalquivir. Rare or absent on the coast and in the humid north and high mountains. Absent from Balearics and Canaries. Subspecies 'calandra'.
