The Tenerife Blue Chaffinch is one of the world's most localized birds and a priority for conservation. It depends entirely on the seeds of the Canary pine. While it is similar in shape to the Common Chaffinch, it has evolved a much larger bill to crack open the tough pine seeds. It is a relatively tame bird but is strictly dependent on the health and connectivity of the mountain pine forests. With only about 1,000 pairs, it is considered vulnerable.
A large, robust finch, significantly larger than the Common Chaffinch. Males are a stunning, uniform slate-blue or leaden-gray across the entire body, with a large, powerful bill. Females and juveniles are much more discreet, in tones of grayish-brown. It is a highly specialized bird, restricted exclusively to the Canary pine forests (Pinus canariensis) of Tenerife. It is a symbol of the island's unique biodiversity.
Endemic to the island of Tenerife. Restricted to the high-altitude Canary pine forests. Listed as a priority species for conservation.
