The Brambling (Royal Finch) is a sign of cold weather. They breed in the vast birch and pine forests of Scandinavia and Siberia, only arriving in Spain during the winter months. They are particularly fond of beech mast and sunflower seeds. Identifying them within a huge flock of common Chaffinches is a classic winter birding challenge. They are unpredictable visitors, with their numbers in Spain varies greatly depending on the severity of the northern winter.

A beautiful winter visitor from the northern taiga. It is similar in shape and size to the Chaffinch, but with a different color pattern. Both sexes have a diagnostic white rump, which is very visible in flight. In winter, they have a warm orange breast and shoulder patch, contrasting with a mottled dark head. It lacks the white outer tail feathers of the Chaffinch. They are highly gregarious and often move in massive mixed flocks with other finches.

Winter visitor only. Can be seen anywhere across the Peninsula and Balearics from November to March. Most common in the northern half. Occasional in the Canary Islands.
