The Common Whitethroat is the 'spirit' of the brambles and hedgerows. It is a very common summer visitor to the northern half of Spain, while in the south it is mostly restricted to mountain ranges. It is a restless and noisy bird that always seems to be in a hurry. Its 'scratchy' voice is one of the classic sounds of the Spanish countryside in May. It is a symbol of the biodiversity of our rural landscapes and traditional field edges.

A medium-sized, lively warbler. Adult males are unmistakable for their charcoal-gray head, bright white throat, and distinctive rusty-brown wing panels. The underparts have a soft pinkish wash. Females are duller with a brown head but retain the white throat and rusty wings. It has a high-pitched, energetic, and 'scratchy' song, often delivered during a short display flight.

Common summer visitor (April-September). Widespread in Northern Spain and mountains. Common passage migrant across the whole Peninsula. Trans-Saharan migrant.
