The Balearic Warbler is a true treasure of Spanish ornithology. It is a resident species that depends entirely on the dense Mediterranean scrub (maquis) of the Balearic Islands. Its status was recently elevated to a full species, making it a priority for conservation in the islands. It is a shy but active bird, usually detected by its sharp, rasping call from the heart of a mastic or rosemary bush.
A small, long-tailed warbler with slate-gray upper parts and pale grayish-white underparts (lacking the pinkish tones of the Dartford Warbler). It has a diagnostic reddish eye-ring and reddish legs. It is a specialized island endemic, found only in the Balearic archipelago. It is very similar to the Marmora's Warbler (found in Sardinia/Corsica) and was recently split from it as a separate species.
DistribuciónDistribution
Ocupa únicamente las islas Baleares (Mallorca, Cabrera, Ibiza y Formentera), excepto Menorca.Endemic to the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Cabrera, Ibiza, Formentera). Absent from Menorca. Strictly resident in dense Mediterranean scrub.
