The Western Orphean Warbler is the 'diva' of the Mediterranean scrub. It is a bird of great elegance and power. Unlike other warblers that hide in the bushes, the Orphean often perches high in the canopy of holm oaks and olive trees. Unfortunately, it is a sensitive species that depends on traditional land use. Its melodic, liquid song in a sunny Spanish 'dehesa' is one of the most classic sounds of our summer. It is a symbol of the health of our traditional Mediterranean landscapes.

The largest and most robust of the Spanish warblers. Adults have a diagnostic black mask (hood) that contrasts sharply with a pure white throat and a pale yellow or white eye. The underparts have a beautiful pinkish-white wash. It has a powerful, melodic song that resembles a Blackbird's. It is a specialist of dehesas, olive groves, and open Mediterranean forests.

Scarce summer visitor. Widespread but localized across the Mediterranean Peninsula. Absent from the North, islands, and North African enclaves. Vulnerable due to habitat loss.
