With its large wingspan, the Mediterranean Cory's Shearwater is one of our largest seabirds. Currently considered a separate species from the Atlantic Cory's Shearwater, it is a pelagic bird widely distributed throughout the Balearic archipelago and other Mediterranean islands.
A large seabird and the largest of the shearwaters present in Europe. It has a robust, rounded head. It displays a dull coloration, with brownish-gray colors on the upper parts reaching the lower part of the bill. It is slightly smaller and lighter than the Atlantic Cory's Shearwater. The underparts are almost entirely white, except for the outer edge of the wings, which is dark. The bill is yellowish with a blackish tip. No discernible differences between sexes or ages. When flying, it alternates long gliding sequences with a few wingbeats.
Endemic to the Mediterranean Sea as a breeder. It nests in the Balearic Islands, Chafarinas, Columbretes, and islets of Murcia and Almería. Outside the breeding season, it can be seen in other coastal locations, especially the Strait of Gibraltar during its pre- and post-nuptial migrations.

RarezaRarity
Between 2020 and 2024 it was seen in Spain on 1,116 separate occasions, adding up to 1,177 days, every year (data from Observation.org, eBird, iNaturalist and ICO published on GBIF) [1, 2]. Each occasion groups the records in the same 10 km square and its 8 neighbours with no gap of more than 14 days, so a bird that stays for weeks in the same place counts only once. More than half of Spanish provinces have no records of it.
In BirdPedy it is uncommon, the level for species with 400 occasions or more, but fewer than 3,400. Being Endangered does not count here: rarity measures how hard it is to see in Spain, not how threatened it is.
