Shows a sharp contrast between its blackish upper parts and white lower half. In Spain, it is only present as a breeder in very small numbers on the islands of Tenerife and La Palma. However, during the autumn passage, it is more frequent off the Galician and Cantabrian coasts.

A medium-sized shearwater, very similar in appearance to the Balearic Shearwater, though it is uniformly very dark, almost black, on the upper parts. This creates a sharp contrast with the entirely white underparts, except for a narrow dark border on the back of the wings. The legs do not protrude past the tail, which ends at a right angle. It has a small head with a thin, long bill and a white crescent behind the dark cheek. No discernible differences between sexes or ages. In flight, it alternates gliding and flapping sequences equally.

Mainly observable in Canarian waters during the breeding period. The only known breeding colonies are in Tenerife and La Palma. Outside the nesting season, it can be seen during autumn passage along the Atlantic coasts, especially in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea.

RarezaRarity

Between 2020 and 2024 it was seen in Spain on 416 separate occasions, adding up to 773 days, every year (data from Observation.org, eBird and iNaturalist published on GBIF) [1, 2]. Each occasion groups the records in the same 10 km square and its 8 neighbours with no gap of more than 14 days, so a bird that stays for weeks in the same place counts only once.

The rules would make it uncommon, but it is one of the few exceptions set by hand, and in BirdPedy it is rare: it is very localised, with records in only 95 squares of 10 km, and it only breeds in the Canary Islands [3]. Being Critically Endangered does not count here: rarity measures how hard it is to see in Spain, not how threatened it is.

The Red Data Book of the Birds of Spain 2021 assesses the subspecies Puffinus puffinus canariensis and classes it as Critically Endangered (CR) because of the decline of its population [4]. BirdPedy uses the same category. Its seo.org account gives the same category [3].
