Entre 2020 y 2024 se vio en España y sus aguas en 427 ocasiones distintas, que suman 676 días, todos los años (datos de Observation.org, eBird y el ICO publicados en GBIF). Se cuentan también los registros en el mar: es un ave marina que, salvo para criar, pasa su vida en alta mar, lejos de la costa. En más de la mitad de las provincias no hay ningún registro suyo. En la guía de aves de SEO/BirdLife figura como habitual en España.Between 2020 and 2024 it was seen in Spain and its waters on 427 separate occasions, adding up to 676 days, every year (data from Observation.org, eBird and ICO published on GBIF). Records at sea are counted too: it is a seabird that, except when breeding, spends its life on the open sea, far from the coast. More than half of Spanish provinces have no records of it. SEO/BirdLife's bird guide lists it as regular in Spain.

La pardela mediterránea, separada recientemente de la pardela balear, es muy similar a aquella. Se distribuye mayoritariamente por el Mediterráneo oriental, siendo más escasa en las costas mediterráneas ibéricas y rara en las atlánticas. Una pequeña población se reproduce en la isla de Menorca.Recently separated from the Balearic Shearwater, it is very similar. Distributed mostly across the eastern Mediterranean, it is scarcer on the Iberian Mediterranean coasts and rare in the Atlantic. A small population breeds on Minorca.

IdentificaciónIdentification

Pardela de tamaño mediano, muy similar y difícil de distinguir de la pardela balear, hasta el punto de que han sido consideradas la misma especie hasta hace pocos años. En general presenta un patrón de coloración intermedio entre la pardela balear y la pardela pichoneta. En comparación con la pardela balear, es ligeramente más pequeña y algo más oscura y contrastada entre sus partes dorsales y ventrales. Además, el blanco del vientre se extiende más hacia los flancos y la cola. Las patas también asoman tras la cola cuando se observa en vuelo. No existen diferencias apreciables entre sexos ni edades.A medium-sized shearwater, very similar and difficult to distinguish from the Balearic Shearwater. Generally shows a coloration pattern intermediate between the Balearic and Manx Shearwaters. Compared to the Balearic, it is slightly smaller and somewhat darker and more contrasted between dorsal and ventral parts. Additionally, the white of the belly extends further toward the flanks and tail. The legs also protrude past the tail in flight. No discernible differences between sexes or ages.

DistribuciónDistribution

En aguas españolas tan solo nidifica en la isla de Menorca, donde fue descubierta como reproductora a principios de este siglo. Recientes estudios apuntan a que los ejemplares encontrados conforman una población con rasgos intermedios entre la pardela balear y la mediterránea. Por ello, parece recomendable tratar esta población como un caso muy singular de pardela balear, originada presumiblemente por un proceso de hibridación por introgresión de la pardela mediterránea en tiempos históricos.In Spanish waters, it only nests on Minorca. Recent studies suggest these individuals form a population with intermediate traits between Balearic and Yelkouan, possibly due to hybridization. It is recommended to treat this population as a singular case of Balearic Shearwater.
