Until recently considered a subspecies of the Yelkouan Shearwater, the Balearic Shearwater is the only seabird endemic to Spain. It breeds in the Balearic Islands but travels to the Atlantic and Cantabrian Seas. It is a highly endangered species, with a population of around 3,000 breeding pairs.
Medium-sized with a small head, thin grayish bill, relatively short wings, and a short tail, from which the legs usually protrude slightly. The upper parts are chocolate brown. Seen from below, the belly and underwings are cream-colored, while the outer wing edges, armpits, throat, and the end of the belly are brownish. No discernible differences between sexes or ages. Its flight usually consists of long sequences of rapid wingbeats interspersed with short glides. It normally stays low over the sea, rarely rising above 10 meters.
As a breeder, its presence is limited to the Balearic archipelago, especially Formentera. Outside the breeding season, it can be seen along the Iberian coasts during its movements to wintering areas.

RarezaRarity
Between 2020 and 2024 it was seen in Spain on 1,557 separate occasions, adding up to 1,716 days, every year (data from Observation.org, eBird and ICO published on GBIF) [1, 2]. Each occasion groups the records in the same 10 km square and its 8 neighbours with no gap of more than 14 days, so a bird that stays for weeks in the same place counts only once. More than half of Spanish provinces have no records of it.
In BirdPedy it is uncommon, the level for species with 400 occasions or more, but fewer than 3,400. Being Critically Endangered does not count here: rarity measures how hard it is to see in Spain, not how threatened it is.
