Perhaps the most familiar lark to the general public, as it is frequently seen in human-modified environments like roadsides, outskirts of villages, and even industrial parks. It is a hardy resident species that has managed to thrive where other larks have failed. However, even this common bird is showing signs of decline due to the industrialization of the countryside and loss of traditional waste ground.

A medium-sized, stocky lark with a prominent, pointed crest on its head. It has a relatively long, slightly curved bill and a short tail. Its plumage is a mix of streaked browns and buffs, camouflaging it perfectly against the soil. In flight, it shows broad wings and an orange-buff tone to the outer tail feathers. It is extremely common and famously 'tame,' often seen running along road verges or in farmyards.

Continuous distribution across the Mediterranean regions of Spain. Absent from most of Galicia, the Cantabrian strip, and the high Pyrenees. Three subspecies: 'pallida' (most of Spain), 'cristata' (northern strip), and 'schmidti' (Ceuta/Melilla).
