A survival specialist of the 'saladares' (salt flats) and stony deserts. It occupies some of the harshest habitats in Spain, from the Ebro salt pans to the coastal dunes of the southeast and the 'malpaís' of the Canaries. Its distribution is highly localized and discontinuous, tied to these specific, fragile ecosystems. Various endemic subspecies are recognized across the Spanish territories.
Very similar to the Greater Short-toed Lark but smaller, more grayish, and notably more streaked—especially on the breast (Greater has an unstreaked breast). It lacks the dark neck patches of the Greater. It has a shorter, more stubby bill. It is a specialist of hypersaline or extremely arid environments where few other birds can survive. In flight, it is fast and active.
Also present in the Canaries. Three subspecies: 'apetzii' (mainland) and two Canary endemics: 'rufescens' (Tenerife) and 'polatzeki' (Eastern islands).
