The Grasshopper Warbler is one of Spain's most elusive birds. While it is a common breeder in northern Europe, in Spain it is restricted to a thin strip of humid meadows in the north. During migration, it is a ghost, passing through the country in small numbers and rarely detected except by those who can identify its mechanical song. It remains one of our least-known breeding passerines.
A small, incredibly shy warbler with a long, rounded tail and cryptic, streaked brownish-green plumage. It is almost never seen in the open, preferring to scuttle through dense grass like a mouse. Its diagnostic feature is its remarkable song: a continuous, high-pitched reel that sounds exactly like a grasshopper or a fishing reel. It can sing for minutes on end without a break, usually at dawn or dusk in wet meadows and reed edges.
Breeding range restricted to the humid Cantabrian-Galician strip, from Galicia to Navarre. Scarce migrant across the rest of the Peninsula and Balearics. Absent from Canary Islands, Ceuta, and Melilla.
