The Moustached Warbler is the only Moustached Warbler that breeds regularly in Spain. It is a true Mediterranean specialist, restricted to a few coastal and interior wetlands. Unlike the more common Reed Warblers, it does not migrate to Africa, staying in its reeds throughout the winter. Its conservation is closely tied to the preservation of our best-coastal marshes and salt pans.

Very similar to the Sedge Warbler but with more contrasted facial markings. It has a bold, clean white eyebrow (supercilium) and a dark, nearly black crown. These features are much sharper than in the Sedge Warbler. Its behavior is also more skulking and Cetti's-like. It has a beautiful, rich song that sounds like a cross between a Nightingale and a Reed Warbler. It is a specialist of Mediterranean reedbeds and is a year-round resident in Spain.

Fragmented distribution across Mediterranean coastal wetlands (Girona to Alicante) and Mallorca. Localized in some interior sites (Ebro Valley, La Mancha, Extremadura). Resident populations (subspecies 'melanopogon') are joined by winterers from France.
