The Reed Warbler is the archetypal reedbed bird. Its rhythmic, repetitive song is a constant feature of Spanish wetlands from April to August. It is a trans-Saharan migrant that depends entirely on healthy reedbeds for breeding. While its plumage is plain, its biology is fascinating—it is the primary host of the Common Cuckoo in European wetlands.

A medium-sized, slim warbler with a typical 'flat-headed' profile and a long, fine bill. It is almost entirely uniform warm brown on the back and unstreaked buffish-white below. Its most characteristic feature is a reddish-brown rump. It is inseparable in the field from the Marsh Warbler (not found in Spain) except by song. It is a strictly summer visitor, arriving in large numbers to build its sophisticated 'nesting cups' suspended between reed stalks.

The subspecies scirpaceus is the one found in western Europe and Spain. It breeds across much of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, but is absent from the Canaries. It occurs in the main valleys and along the coasts of Iberia, with the largest numbers in the Duero, Guadalquivir and Ebro basins and the Levante.
