The Cirl Bunting is the southern version of the Yellowhammer. While its cousin loves the cold north, the Cirl Bunting thrives in the warmth of the Mediterranean. It is a resident bird that defends its territory year-round. Unfortunately, it is currently in a moderate decline due to the intensification of agriculture and the use of pesticides, which reduce the insect food needed for its chicks. It is a characteristic bird of our rural hedges and gardens.
Similar in shape to the Yellowhammer but with more contrasted facial markings. Males have a diagnostic black throat and eye-line, framed by bright yellow, and a slate-gray breast band. Like the Yellowhammer, it has a warm reddish rump and a long tail with white outer feathers. It is the most common and widespread bunting of the Mediterranean countryside, occupying forest edges, sotos, and traditional orchards.
Widespread across the Peninsula (except the highest Pyrenees and the most arid plains) and the Balearic Islands (absent from Menorca). Absent from Canary Islands. Resident. Subspecies 'cirlus'.

BirdPedy uses 14 habitat categories of its own, with fixed definitions, and supports each one with the text of the seo.org account [1] or, when that is not enough, with the III Atlas or another source on Spain. For this species, some decisions depart from the account or deserve an explanation.
We remove “Mediterranean forest”: the III Atlas does not find it in holm or cork oak woods, and the account does not mention them [2].
