Similar to the Ortolan Bunting but slightly smaller. Adult males have a diagnostic, solid blue-gray head and a deep rusty-orange throat and underparts, without the yellow seen in Ortolan. It has a bold white eye-ring. It breeds in the rocky, thorny scrublands of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East.

Very rare accidental visitor from the Eastern Mediterranean/Turkey. One homologated record: Cabrera, Baleares (May 2011, 2nd-year bird).
