The Bar-headed Goose is the 'mountaineer' of the bird world. Arrivals in Spain are almost always considered escapes from parks, but because there are feral populations in Northern Europe, some may be natural wanderers. They often follow wild Greylags on their migrations. Seeing the 'striking' head of a Bar-headed Goose among our local flocks is a sign of the exotic and the unexpected in nature. It represents the absolute endurance of life and the rewards of birdwatching in our winter fields.

The legendary high-altitude champion. Adult are unmistakable for their pale gray body and white head with two diagnostic black 'bars' across the crown. They have a long, yellowish-orange bill and legs. In flight, they show a beautiful black-and-white wing pattern. They are incredibly famous for their migration over the Himalayas at extreme altitudes where oxygen is almost absent.

Rare visitor/accidental. Most records are considered escapes from captivity or feral birds from Northern Europe. Localized records in the North and Mallorca.
