The Fieldfare is the 'Viking' of the thrushes. It arrives in Spain during the hardest winters, fleeing the freezing weather of Northern and Eastern Europe. Often appearing in massive flocks, they roam the northern plateaus and mountains in search of berries. Their energetic chattering and bold colors bring a touch of the wild, northern winter to our country. They are symbols of the dynamic relationship between bird movement and the global weather patterns.
A large, colorful, and aggressive thrush. It is unmistakably bicolor: it has a blue-gray head and rump and a warm chestnut-brown back. The breast is heavily spotted on a buff background. It is highly social and has a very characteristic loud, chattering 'tsak-tsak-tsak' call. It is a colonial breeder in the North.
Regular winter visitor (October-March). Common in the North and mountain ranges. Scarce in the South and islands. Mass arrivals occur during cold waves.
