A hardy and powerful thrush that is well-distributed across Spain's forested areas. It is particularly fond of mountain pine and oak forests where it feeds on mistletoe berries—hence its name. It is one of the first birds to sing in early spring, often from the very top of a tall tree. Unlike the Song Thrush, it is a year-round resident in many parts of the country, only moving to lower altitudes in the heart of winter.
The largest thrush in Europe, significantly bulkier than the Song Thrush. It has a pale, grayish-brown back and very bold, round black spots on a white breast. In flight, it is characterized by its long, white-edged tail and conspicuous white underwings (axillaries). It has a very upright stance and a large, rounded head. Its call is a harsh, dry rattle, and its song is a loud, melancholy whistle often delivered during stormy weather.
Widespread across the Peninsula, only scarce in the most arid and treeless parts of the Ebro Valley, La Mancha, and the Guadalquivir. Does not breed in the Balearics or Canaries, though it appears as an occasional winterer in the Balearics.
