The Sand Martin is an aerial insectivore that lives in dense, noisy colonies. In Spain, its presence as a breeder is fluctuating and somewhat scarce, but the country is a vital corridor for millions of European birds during migration. It is the first swallow to arrive in spring, often appearing near rivers and wetlands before the others. Its survival depends on the availability of eroding riverbanks.
The smallest of the Spanish swallows and martins. It has a uniform matte-brown back and pure white underparts, distinguished by a bold brown band across the breast. It has a short, slightly forked tail and tiny, unfeathered legs. It is highly gregarious and almost always associated with water. It is a specialist nester, excavating long tunnels in vertical sandy riverbanks or quarries.
Breeds mainly in the Duero, Tagus, and Upper Ebro basins. Scarcer in the Guadiana and south. Widespread on passage throughout Spain, including Canary Islands. Subspecies 'riparia'.
