The most urban of all swallows. House Martins build mud cup nests attached to the eaves of buildings, often in large, noisy colonies. While highly adaptable, they are currently suffering from the 'cleaning' of modern facades and the removal of nests, as well as a decline in flying insects. Although most winter in Africa, recent years have seen small numbers staying in the warm southwest of Spain.

A small, compact swallow with metallic blue-black upper parts and a pure, dazzling white rump—its most distinctive feature. The entire underparts are pure white. It has a short, forked tail. Uniquely, its short legs are covered in white downy feathers ('feathered boots'). It is highly gregarious and has successfully moved from its original cliff-nesting sites to colonize modern city centers.

Summer visitor. Breeds across the entire Peninsula, Balearics, Ceuta, and Melilla. Widespread on passage in the Canaries. Small wintering population recently confirmed in the Tagus and Guadalquivir valleys. Subspecies 'meridionale'.
