An Asian species introduced to the Peninsula and Balearics in historical times. Currently, its presence is largely maintained by the release of thousands of farm-reared birds for hunting. Some wild populations exist in agricultural mosaics with small woodlands.
A large, long-tailed bird with spectacular sexual dimorphism. Males have iridescent reddish-brown plumage spotted with black and white, a dark green head with violet reflections, red facial wattles, and a prominent white collar. Females are cryptically colored in buff-brown with black spots. Their flight is heavy and noisy with a characteristic whirring sound.
Scattered distribution across Spain, most frequent in the Catalan coast and Balearics. Absent from Canaries and North African territories.
