The Merlin is the 'speed-demon' of our winter fields. It arrives from northern latitudes to spend the winter in the open landscapes of the Peninsula. It is a relentless hunter of larks and pipits. Despite its small size, it is incredibly brave and efficient. Watching its low-level pursuit across a winter cereal field is a thrilling experience. It is a symbol of the wild, open winters of the Spanish plateaus.

The smallest falcon in Europe, compact and powerful with short, broad wings. Males have a beautiful slate-blue back and rusty-streaked underparts. Females and juveniles are brownish and heavily streaked. It has an exceptionally fast, low, and direct flight, used for surprising small birds in open country. It lacks the prominent 'mustache' of the larger falcons.

Common winter visitor (October-March). Found mainly in the Northern and Southern Plateaus and the Ebro Valley. Scarce in the islands. Two subspecies: 'aesalon' and 'subaesalon' (Icelandic).
