A very common and successful bird found in almost every environment, from deep forests to urban parks. In winter, Spain hosts the largest concentration of Wood Pigeons in the world, as millions of birds migrate from northern Europe to feed on acorns in the Spanish dehesas (oak parklands), supporting a significant hunting tradition.

The largest and most robust pigeon in Europe, easily identified by its size, white neck patches (absent in juveniles), and broad white wing bars that are very prominent in flight. It has a mauve-pink breast and a blue-gray head. It is a powerful flyer with loud, clattering wingbeats upon take-off. Its rhythmic 5-syllable cooing is one of the most familiar sounds of the Spanish countryside and cities.

Widespread and common throughout the Peninsula and Balearics. Absent from the Canaries. Highest densities found in the oak forests of central Spain in winter.

BirdPedy uses 14 habitat categories of its own, with fixed definitions, and supports each one with the text of the seo.org account [1] or, when that is not enough, with the III Atlas or another source on Spain. For this species, some decisions depart from the account or deserve an explanation.

We keep “Urban and rural”: the account does not say so, but it breeds in city parks and gardens [2].
