A true mountaineer. The Alpine Chough lives at extreme altitudes, often above the tree line in the high Pyrenees and Picos de Europa. It is highly social and remarkably tame, often approaching hikers and mountain refuges for food scraps. It is a specialist of the alpine meadows and vertical cliffs, perfectly adapted to the thin air and cold winds of the Iberian peaks.

A medium-sized, sleek crow with jet-black glossy plumage. It is characterized by its short, bright yellow bill and robust orange-red legs. It is slightly smaller and more slender than the Red-billed Chough. In flight, it is a master of high-altitude aerobatics, with more rounded wings and a longer tail than its cousin. Its call is a distinct, high-pitched 'creee-er' whistle, very different from the 'chow' of the Red-billed Chough.

Strictly an alpine species. Restricted to the highest mountain ranges of the north: the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains. Absent from the rest of the Peninsula and all archipelagos. Highly localized.
