A medium-sized, stocky corvid with a very long and powerful bill. It has a chocolate-brown body heavily spotted with white, a unique 'starry' appearance. It has a short tail with a broad white terminal band. Its flight is heavy and crow-like. It is a specialist of the high-altitude pine forests, feeding mainly on seeds and nuts.

Very rare accidental visitor from Northern/Eastern Europe. Only one homologated record: Ribes, Catalonia (Feb 1985). Associated with irruptive movements.
