The Common Raven is a legendary bird of intelligence and mystery. It is a highly adaptable survivor, found from the coastal cliffs to the highest mountain peaks. In the Canary Islands, it is represented by a unique endemic subspecies. It is a long-lived bird with a complex social life and is one of the few animals observed to play for fun. While primarily a scavenger, it is a powerful predator when the opportunity arises.
The largest passerine in the world, the size of a buzzard. It is entirely jet-black with a massive, heavy Bill and 'shaggy' feathers on the throat (the 'hackles'). In flight, it is unmistakable due to its large size, long wings, and diagnostic wedge-shaped (V-pointed) tail. It is a master of the air, performing spectacular rolls and dives. Its voice is a deep, resonant 'pruk-pruk' or 'kronk' that can be heard from a great distance.
Found across almost the entire Peninsula and both archipelagos, as well as Ceuta. Scarce in the flat, treeless plains of the Mesetas and Guadalquivir. Three subspecies: 'hispanus' (mainland/Baleares), the endemic 'canariensis' in the Canaries, and 'tingitanus' in Ceuta.

BirdPedy uses 14 habitat categories of its own, with fixed definitions, and supports each one with the text of the seo.org account [1] or, when that is not enough, with the III Atlas or another source on Spain. For this species, some decisions depart from the account or deserve an explanation.
We add “Urban and rural”: the account does not say so, but the III Atlas mentions rubbish dumps, which the definitions count as urban [2].
