The Carrion Crow is often unjustly accused of being a pest, but it is a vital scavenger and pest controller. It is exceptionally wary and suspicious of humans. In northern and eastern Europe, it hybridizes with the Hooded Crow, but in Spain, only the all-black Carrion Crow is found. It is a generalist feeder, eating everything from grain and insects to carrion and small vertebrates.

A robust, all-black crow with a heavy, powerful bill. Its plumage has a slight green or purple sheen. It is very similar to the Raven but smaller, with a square tail (Raven's is wedge-shaped) and a less massive bill. It lacks the 'shaggy' throat feathers of the Raven. While they often live in pairs, they can form large flocks at rich food sources. It is highly intelligent and adaptable to both rural and urban environments.

Widespread across the northern half of the Peninsula; much scarcer and localized in the south/west. Mainly absent from the southwest and the Mediterranean coast. Absent from both archipelagos, Ceuta, and Melilla. Subspecies 'corone'.

BirdPedy uses 14 habitat categories of its own, with fixed definitions, and supports each one with the text of the seo.org account [1] or, when that is not enough, with the III Atlas or another source on Spain. For this species, some decisions depart from the account or deserve an explanation.

We add “Deciduous forest”: forest is its second preference; riverside woods and poplar groves [2]. We keep “High mountain”: the account places it in mountain passes above 1,800 m; the III Atlas speaks of where it breeds, not where it feeds in summer [1].
