One of the most specialized and charismatic birds of the Mediterranean. Its global distribution is restricted to the Iberian Peninsula and Northwest Africa. It is a specialist of arid, rocky, and often vertical environments with very little vegetation. It is famous for its unique nesting behavior: the male carries hundreds of small stones to the nest site, sometimes weighing more than the bird itself, to form a 'foundation' or defensive barrier.

A relatively large and sturdy wheatear, unmistakable due to its jet-black plumage. Both sexes are very dark, but males are a deep, glossy black while females are a dark chocolate-brown. The most striking feature is the brilliant white rump and the base of the tail, which features a diagnostic inverted black 'T' at the tip—highly visible in flight and during its constant tail-flicking displays. It has a heavy, direct flight and a habit of perching on prominent rocks.

Occupies the warmest and driest areas of the Peninsula, especially the Ebro Valley (up to Navarre), the Mediterranean coast, and Andalusia. It extends through Sierra Morena into central Spain and parts of Extremadura. Absent from all archipelagos and North African territories. Subspecies 'leucura' in the mainland; 'syenitica' in Melilla.
