Uniformly grayish in males and brownish in females, the most distinctive feature in both sexes is the conspicuous white speculum, very visible in flight and when resting or swimming. Widely distributed, breeding in various Spanish regions and hosting large contingents of northern European winterers.
Slightly smaller than the Mallard, the Gadwall is a slender bird with relatively dull and uniform plumage. During the breeding period, males show fine gray vermiculation, with a black rear and a white speculum (the most distinctive feature). Females are brownish; juveniles resemble females but with more reddish tints. In flight, the white speculum and chestnut patches on the upper wings stand out.
Subspecies 'strepera'. Main breeding hubs: Doñana, Ebro Delta, and La Mancha.
