The Greater Scaup is a visitor from the high Arctic tundra. It is primarily a marine duck in winter, preferring coastal bays and estuaries, though it occasionally visits large inland lagoons like Gallocanta. It is never very abundant in Spain, with only a few individuals or small groups arriving each winter. It is a hardy diver that searches for mollusks in the cold coastal waters of the north.
A large diving duck with a very rounded head and a relatively long, broad bill. Breeding males have a black head with green iridescence, a black breast and rump, and strikingly white flanks and a pale gray back. Females are brownish-gray with a very characteristic and broad white patch at the base of the bill. It is similar to the Tufted Duck but significantly larger and lacks any crest.
Most frequent on the northern coasts (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria) and the northeast (Catalonia). Occasional in the Balearics and some inland lagoons. Irregular elsewhere.
