The Grey Plover is a masterpiece of the coastal winter. Unlike the Golden Plover which loves-the fields, the Grey Plover is almost exclusively found at the seaside. It is a solitary and wary bird, often seen standing still on a rock or mudflat for long periods before making a short run. Its haunting, three-note whistle is one of the most characteristic sounds of the Spanish coastal rías and marshes during the winter months.

A robust, large-headed plover with a thick black bill. In breeding plumage, it is spectacular with jet-black underparts and a high-contrast silvery-white and black 'spangled' back. In winter, it is a uniform, elegant gray with a white belly. It is unmistakable in flight due to its brilliant black axillaries ('black armpits') which contrast with a white underwing. It is a specialist of coastal mudflats and sandy beaches.

Widespread and common winter visitor along all Spanish coasts (Atlantic, Mediterranean, Balearics, Canaries). Main concentrations in the Southwest (Doñana, Cadiz) and Ebro Delta. Rare inland.
