Similar to the Greater Sand Plover but significantly smaller with a shorter, finer bill and a more rounded head. In breeding plumage, it shows a warm reddish-brown breast band. It has dark, relatively short legs. It is a specialist of the high-altitude steppes and salt lakes of Central Asia. In the field, separating it from its 'Greater' cousin requires careful measurement of the bill and observation of the leg length.

Only two homologated records for Spain: Ciudad Real (1981) and La Palma (2003). Usually seen in summer (June-August).
