The Dunlin (Common Stint) is the staple of the Spanish wetlands in winter. Millions of birds from Northern Europe and the Arctic arrive each year. It is a highly social bird, forming massive, dense flocks that move in perfect unison. Three different subspecies visit us, reflecting the diverse origins of our wintering populations. It is a sentinel of our estuary health and the fundamental bird for any student of shorebird migration.

The most common and widespread of the small shorebirds. It is characterized by its slightly down-curved bill and its unique breeding plumage: a bold, solid black patch on the belly. In winter, it is a relatively plain grayish-brown with white underparts. It is exceptionally successful and adaptable, being found in almost any wetland habitat from coastal mudflats to inland reservoirs.

Abundant winter visitor and passage migrant across all Spanish coasts and many inland wetlands. Main concentrations in the Ebro Delta, Doñana, Cadiz, and Galicia. Three subspecies: 'alpina', 'schinzii', 'arctica'.
