The Buff-breasted Sandpiper is one of the most attractive American waders to visit Spain. It is unusual in that it often stays away from water, preferring shortcut grass or dry mudflats. Most Spanish records involve juveniles in autumn. Its gentle appearance and tameness make it a favorite for observers. It is a champion traveler from the Canadian Arctic to the Argentine Pampas that occasionally stops at our Mediterranean oases.
A unique and beautiful shorebird with an exceptionally plain, but warm buff-colored head and underparts. It has a scaly-patterned back and bright yellow-orange legs. It lacks the bold markings of most other shorebirds. In flight, it reveals a diagnostic white 'moon' on the under-wing. It is famous for its lekking behavior in the Arctic and is a relatively frequent accidental visitor to European grasslands and saltmarshes.
Rare but regular accidental visitor from North America. Regular annual passage in small numbers. Widespread across the Peninsula (especially Galicia) and the Canary Islands. September-October records.
