The Barnacle Goose breeds in the remote Arctic (Greenland, Svalbard, Russia). It gets its name from an old medieval myth that they hatched from barnacles! In Spain, they are rare winter visitors, with Doñana and the Zamoran lagoons (Villafáfila) being the most likely places to see them. Their presence adds a touch of the wild Arctic to our Mediterranean marshes during the coldest months of the year.

A medium-sized, strikingly contrasted goose with a 'masked' appearance. It has a creamy-white face against a jet-black head, neck, and breast. Its back is a beautiful silvery-gray with delicate black barring. It is a specialist of coastal saltmarshes and high-latitude cliffs. In Spain, it is a rare but regular winter visitor, usually found in the company of Greylag Geese in the wetlands of the northwest and the south.

Regular but scarce winter visitor (passage). Found mainly in the northwest (Galicia, Villafáfila) and the Guadalquivir marshes. Occasional in the Ebro Delta and the Balearics.
