Swifts represent the extreme of aerial evolution. Their lives are spent almost entirely in the sky. The Common Swift is the only European species that survives in relatively cool climates. It is a strictly migratory bird, spending only about three months in Spain to breed before racing back to Africa. Traditionally a cliff-nester, it now relies almost entirely on urban buildings.
A medium-sized bird with a 'crossbow' silhouette and incredible aerial speed. It is almost entirely blackish-brown (appearing black) except for a small pale throat patch. It has exceptionally short legs and long, scythe-shaped wings. A master of the air, it never lands except to nest, spending months on the wing feeding, mating, and even sleeping. Its loud, high-pitched 'screaming' calls are the soundtrack of Spanish city summers.
Widespread and abundant throughout the Peninsula, Balearics, Ceuta, and Melilla. Present but localized in the Canary Islands. A familiar summer resident in almost every Spanish town and city.
