The Rock Sparrow is a bird of the open, stony countryside, rocky ravines, and old stone buildings. It gets its Spanish name from its distinctive, high-pitched 'screaming' or 'chattering' call. Unlike its cousins, it is not strictly tied to humans, though it often uses traditional rural stone barns and wells. It is a hardy resident species that has managed to maintain stable populations in most of its Iberian range.
Larger and bulkier than the House Sparrow with a noticeably robust head and a very thick, pale bill. Its plumage is a mix of browns and grays with a bold 'striped' head pattern (pale central crown stripe and bold white eyebrow). Its most unique feature is a yellow patch on the throat, though this is often hard to see. In flight, it reveals diagnostic white spots at the tips of the tail feathers. It is much more rural and wild than the other sparrows.
Widespread across the Peninsula except for the humid northern strip and Galicia. Common in the two Mesetas, the Ebro, and Andalusia. Also present in both archipelagos. Absent from Ceuta and Melilla. Subspecies 'petronia'.

BirdPedy uses 14 habitat categories of its own, with fixed definitions, and supports each one with the text of the seo.org account [1] or, when that is not enough, with the III Atlas or another source on Spain. For this species, some decisions depart from the account or deserve an explanation.
We add “Herbaceous crops”: farmland, which the III Atlas specifies as dry cereal fields [2]. We remove “Agricultural mosaic”: the farmland it uses is open dry cereal land (arable crops), not mixed countryside [2].
