A unique and unmistakable American blackbird. Breeding males are the only North American birds with a 'reverse' color pattern: black below and white/buffy above, with a diagnostic yellow-cream patch on the back of the head (nape). Females and winter birds are much duller, yellowish-buff and heavily streaked, resembling large sparrows. It has a very long hind-claw and pointed tail feathers.
Very rare accidental visitor from North America. Approx. 3 homologated records, all in the Canary Islands (Lanzarote/Fuerteventura). Most records in autumn.

RarezaRarity
Between 2020 and 2024 it was seen in Spain on a single occasion, lasting 1 day, in 1 of the 5 years (data from Observation.org and eBird published on GBIF) [1, 2]. Each occasion groups the records in the same 10 km square and its 8 neighbours with no gap of more than 14 days, so a bird that stays for weeks in the same place counts only once.
In BirdPedy it is legendary, the level for species with 5 occasions or fewer in 5 years.
