Until the late 19th century, it was an African species, but in the last century, it embarked on a surprising colonizing process that has made it cosmopolitan, spreading from southern Europe to Oceania and North America.

A small to medium-sized egret with quite compact shapes, characterized by having a relatively short neck, legs, and bill. Its plumage is mostly white (no sexual dimorphism). Breeders have white plumage adorned with ochre to orange tones on the crown, nape, chest, and back. The bill, eyes, and legs become intensely reddish. Non-breeders are much paler with a slight ochre tint on the crown and a yellow bill. Juveniles are entirely white. It looks very white and plump in flight.

Occupies two areas: a more abundant western one (Andalusia, Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha, Castile-León, and Madrid) and an eastern one (Levant, Aragon, Navarre, and Basque Country).
